Iowa City drag racing teenagers to face trial in October

The two teenagers involved in a crash that killed a 22-year-old woman last year are due to go on trial in October.

Elijah Seals and Kesean Ford, both of Iowa City, were charged last October for allegedly participating in a drag race that ended in a fatal collision that killed Jennifer Russell on May 27, 2023.

Seals and Ford are each charged with manslaughter and one count of involuntary manslaughter.

Couple initially charged with reckless driving

It was only five months after the accident that Seals and Ford were charged with manslaughter and murder.

The case was originally filed as three separate charges citing drag racing, excessive speed and reckless driving. In court documents, prosecutors said the charges could be consolidated into a single charge “with multiple theories of liability.”

The trial is scheduled to begin on October 8, about six weeks after the original hearing date of August 20.

The family filed a civil suit against the two teenagers and their insurance company, but the suit was voluntarily dismissed without prejudice. Nine days after the civil suit was dismissed, charges were filed.

Teenagers accused of drag racing on E. Court Street

Seals and Ford were allegedly involved in a side-by-side drag race on two-lane East Court Street in Iowa City on the evening of May 27. Witnesses reported seeing the vehicles driven by Ford and Seals traveling at high speeds.

The vehicle allegedly driven by Ford, a 2008 Saturn Vue, struck the vehicle driven by Russell of Waterloo, the district's news release said. In the first collision, Russell's vehicle collided with Seals' 2012 GMC Acadia.

Russell had just entered the intersection after stopping at one of the stop signs. She later died from injuries sustained in the collision.

Local authorities reviewed vehicle and cell phone data and determined that Ford and Seals were traveling side by side and at high speed on Court Street, allegedly at least twice the speed limit of 25 miles per hour. Court Street is a two-lane road with one lane in each direction. The two also allegedly ignored a stop sign at the intersection, prosecutors said.

Russell was remembered for her love of dance and honored by friends

Jennifer Russell was born and raised in Waterloo. She loved dancing and took lessons for 13 years. According to her obituary, she was also part of the dance team at Waterloo West High School. She was a manager at Jethro's BBQ and raised a puppy named Maci.

On what would have been Russell's 23rd birthday in 2023, friends gathered for a candlelight vigil and memorial ceremony in Waterloo. Friends of Russell also erected a butterfly bench in her memory.

Russell would have turned 24 on September 13th.

Russell loved music and enjoyed attending “many concerts” with her friends and family, her obituary states.

The family's memorial fund for Jennifer has raised nearly $14,000 on GoFundMe.
