Wales vs Turkey Predictions

By reaching the quarter-finals of the 2024 European Championship, Turkey have given their vociferous supporters plenty to cheer about and their positive year can continue with a win in Wales to kick off their Nations League campaign.

A new era begins for Wales after the team made changes in the summer with the appointment of Craig Bellamy as their new head coach.

Bellamy had a successful playing career for Wales, scoring 19 goals in 78 international matches, but never played in a major tournament.

After Bellamy retired, the Welsh team enjoyed a golden era, reaching the semi-finals of the 2016 European Championship and qualifying for the 2020 European Championship and the 2022 World Cup.

However, they missed out on a place at the 2024 European Championship and subsequently had dismal results in friendlies: they drew 0-0 with Gibraltar and lost 4-0 in Slovakia.

Bellamy's predecessor, Robert Page, was sacked after the defeat to Slovakia, despite arguing that he had done a reasonable job under difficult circumstances.

The 50-year-old is the only person to have coached Wales at two major tournaments and his failed attempt to lead the team to Euro 2024 was significantly marred by the loss of Gareth Bale, who announced his retirement in January 2023.

Bellamy may be the next Welsh manager to realise just how difficult that job has become in the post-Bale era, and his first selection will be complicated by the absence of injured Leeds winger Dan James, a key player in recent seasons.

Wales no longer seem to be the team that can compete with the top teams and could potentially struggle against Turkey, who were five points ahead of them in Euro 2024 qualifying.

Turkey came to the European Championship with modest expectations but quickly earned a reputation as a talented, dynamic team with some outstanding young players.

Signs of inexperience were evident in the quarter-finals, when they gave up a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to the Netherlands. However, head coach Vincenzo Montella ended the tournament on a positive note, including outstanding performances from precocious young attackers Kenan Yildiz and Arda Guler.

Exciting times lie ahead for Montella's team. They are favourites to win their group in the Nations League with odds of 11:10 and would be well worth a win as a worthwhile favourite to start the team.
