Calgary water main: 16 Avenue NW closed for repairs

Calgary residents may have caught on to the water conservation issue, as their usage dropped slightly on Wednesday.

According to the city's drinking water needs dashboard, residents and businesses consumed 500 million liters of water.

That is six million liters less than the day before, but it is exactly the point where the water supply is at its limit, according to the city.

On Tuesday, the City of Calgary announced that it could meet its daily water consumption of 485 million litres while maintaining its pumps and other infrastructure.

While up to 500 million litres can still be provided, authorities said this would overwhelm equipment and could cause difficulties in filling underground water tanks.

Starting Thursday, a section of 16 Avenue NW will be closed for repairs to the water main.

The road will be closed from 46th Street NW to the Bowness Road intersection.

For the duration of the closure, traffic will be diverted via Bowness Road.
