Paralympics 2024 in Paris: GB's Breen misses long jump medal despite dead heat

It rained heavily in the French capital all Thursday morning and the race track at the Stade de France was flooded.

But Nicholson defied the conditions and threw 9.44 meters – just 0.03 meters under her personal best – to secure third place.

Mariia Pomazan from Ukraine and Wang Jun from China took first and second place with distances of 12.75 m and 11.94 m respectively.

Bronze represents the culmination of three strong years for Nicholson since she finished sixth at the previous Paralympics in Tokyo in 2021.

The 29-year-old from Cumbria recently set a new personal best at the World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Paris, improving her previous best by 35cm and almost matching that mark again in the Paralympic final when it mattered.

“It's absolutely amazing. Honestly, all the hard work of the last 10 years has absolutely paid off,” she said.

“It's been such a good year with a lot of personal bests, so we knew if I went out there and did my best, we had a chance to medal.”

On Thursday evening, Great Britain will compete for several gold medals in Paris.

Sammi Kinghorn, who won gold in the T53 100m on Wednesday and two silver medals earlier at the Games, is aiming for her fourth medal in the 400m in 2024.

Daniel Pembroke defends his title in the men's F13 javelin and 41-year-old Dan Greaves competes in his seventh Paralympics in the men's F64 discus, while Maguire and Woods advance to their finals.
