Charges of sexual assault against US film mogul Harvey Weinstein dropped due to “no realistic prospect of conviction”

The public prosecutor has dropped the charge of indecent assault against US film mogul Harvey Weinstein because, according to their decision, there is “no realistic prospect of a conviction”.

The 71-year-old producer was charged with two counts of sexual assault in June 2022.

Frank Ferguson, head of the CPS's special crime and counter-terrorism unit, said: “After reviewing the evidence in this case, the CPS has decided to discontinue criminal proceedings against Harvey Weinstein.”

Previously, on April 25, the New York Court of Appeals overturned his 2020 rape conviction after ruling that he had not received a fair trial, effectively erasing his 23-year prison sentence and ordering a retrial.

However, he remains in prison after being found guilty of raping and sexually assaulting Italian actress and model Evgeniya Chernyshova in Los Angeles and sentenced to 16 years in prison.
