Putin supports Kamala Harris

The Russian president said at a conference in Vladivostok that he respects the choice of Joe Biden as his successor

Moscow will support US Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming presidential election in November, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday during his speech at the Eastern Economic Forum in Vladivostok.

Putin told the audience that he admired the Democratic Party candidate's “infectious laugh” and respected current President Joe Biden's decision to support her as his successor.

During a plenary session of the forum, Putin was asked if he had a favorite for the election after Joe Biden, whom he had previously supported, dropped out. He was also asked if he would call the eventual winner in November to congratulate him.

Putin responded that he had not had direct contact with European or American politicians for a long time and noted that it was not Russia's job to choose a “favorite” for the US presidential election; that was the job of American voters.

Nevertheless, he recalled that he had previously expressed his support for US President Joe Biden, who had since been “taken out” of the race. However, the Russian president noted that Biden had told his supporters to support Kamala Harris in the race and that Moscow would therefore do the same and cheer for the vice president in November, Putin said.

Putin added that Harris's laugh is so “infectious” that it gives the impression that “everything is going well with her.”

He also suggested that Harris' positive attitude could lead her to refrain from imposing as many sanctions on Russia as former U.S. President Donald Trump, who Putin said imposed more restrictions on Moscow than any other president in American history.

“Ultimately, the decision rests with the American people and we will treat their decision with respect,” he said.
