Deaf e-hailing driver files memo with PMO for inaction in his personal injury case

Deaf e-hailing driver Ong Ing Keong, who was allegedly attacked by a police escort in May, has submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister denouncing the failure to prosecute the police officer for the attack.

Ong was accompanied by Lawyers for Liberty, representatives of the Malaysian Deaf Advocacy and Well-being Organisation (Dawn), as well as NGOs and human rights activists.

The group gathered outside the Prime Minister's Office at 11am to demand justice for Ong.

It is understood that the group also forwarded a copy of the dashcam video to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

On May 26, Ong, 46, was allegedly attacked by a security guard who was escorting a VVIP outside the St. Regis Hotel in Kuala Lumpur while he was waiting outside the lobby to pick up clients.

Ong claimed that a man knocked on his car window and then punched him in the face. He filed two reports at the Brickfields police station and was treated at Kuala Lumpur Hospital for a soft tissue injury.

On May 31, Johor Tunku Regent Ismail Sultan Ibrahim called on police to investigate the alleged assault, saying he wanted justice for Ong, adding that he had instructed the police escort team to cooperate with the investigation.

Tunku Ismail also condemned attempts to drag the royal institution into the matter, saying it was inappropriate to link the actions of external security forces to himself or the royal institution.

Ong was summoned to Bukit Aman on June 5 to assist in a disciplinary investigation into the incident. The case is being investigated under Section 323 of the Criminal Code for causing bodily harm. Ong was questioned for four hours, accompanied by lawyers and an interpreter.

On June 14, Razarudin announced that the investigation documents had been sent to the AGC. – September 5, 2024.
