KCPS dismisses wrongful death suit in middle school student's death

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KCTV) – Kansas City Public Schools was acquitted Wednesday of a wrongful death lawsuit alleging a Northeast Middle School student died in April 2022.

Manny Guzman, 15, was stabbed to death in a school bathroom by a 14-year-old classmate on April 12, 2022. The stabbing occurred during an incident in the school bathroom.

In October 2023, Guzman's mother, Vicenta Guzman, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against KCPS, accusing the district of negligence.

The school district successfully argued that it was immune from the lawsuit. Court documents appear to show that the lawsuit against the manufacturer of the metal detectors is still ongoing.

KCTV has contacted the family's attorney but has not yet received a response.

In May, the classmate who stabbed Guzman was convicted. A judge ordered that the teen, who admitted to killing Guzman, be taken into custody by the Division of Youth Services (DYS), which will decide where the teen will be placed and how long he will be held.
