Correctional officer arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting an inmate at Framingham State Prison for Women

A correctional officer at the state prison for women in Framingham was arrested Wednesday for allegedly sexually assaulting an inmate and purchasing underwear for other inmates, authorities said.

Joao Gomes, 49, of Pawtucket, Rhode Island, has been charged with four counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault and battery, and three counts of delivering items to inmates in a reformatory, the Middlesex District Attorney's Office said in a statement.

A date for his appearance in Middlesex Superior Court has not yet been set, the statement said.

Gomes allegedly sexually abused a female inmate at the Massachusetts Correctional Institution, where he worked as a correctional officer, on several occasions and purchased underwear for several inmates, the statement said.

He was arrested at his home in Rhode Island, the statement said.

Gomes is the first person charged with rape under an updated legal provision in Middlesex County, authorities said. The law was changed in 2020 to prevent law enforcement from engaging in sexual relations with anyone in their care or control, the statement said.

Neither the state correctional authority nor the correctional officers' union immediately responded to requests for comment on Wednesday evening.
