China builds database of migrant children to improve social services

China is setting up a nationwide database of children of Migrant workers while the country is struggling with a rise in juvenile crime.
The database will record children who “left behindin their hometown while their parents work elsewhere, as well as children who have moved with their parents to other parts of the country in search of job opportunities.

Guo Yuqiang, director of the child welfare department at the Ministry of Civil Affairs, said on Wednesday that the central government's goal is to have an accurate list of children in need of care by 2026.

The aim was also to achieve visible results in protecting the mental and physical health of these children by 2035.

Gao said the central government has drawn up an action plan to protect migrant children, the first such plan at the national level in China.
