GES begins investigation into stabbing at O'Reilly SHS and expresses condolences to the family

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has expressed its sadness over the tragic incident at O'Reilly Senior High School which resulted in the untimely death of graduating student Edward Sackey.

In a statement signed by the Head of Public Relations, Cassandra Twum Ampofo, GES expressed its deepest condolences to the grieving family, friends and the entire school community.

The deceased reportedly died on Monday, September 2, after being stabbed in the chest during an altercation with a classmate.

The victim, 18-year-old Edward Sackey, was a student in the school's General Arts faculty.

The incident occurred on campus after a fight broke out between Edward and Godwin, a fellow student from the Faculty of Fine Arts, shortly after the deceased had finished an exam.

On September 4, 2024, a team led by the Director General of the GES visited both the school and the family of the deceased to express their condolences.

The GES assured: “We are working closely with the relevant authorities to ensure a thorough investigation.”

“We hope to complete our administrative investigation within two weeks, while police take over the criminal investigation. We are pleased to report that calm has returned to campus, and we are working to ensure the well-being and safety of all students and staff,” the press release said.

“GES remains committed to providing a safe and conducive learning environment for all students,” the statement added. “We will continue to work tirelessly to prevent such incidents and ensure that our schools remain safe places for academic excellence.”

The GES also urged the public to refrain from speculation about the incident and to allow the investigation process to proceed freely.

“We understand the public's concerns but ask for patience while we investigate. We will provide updates as needed,” the press release continued.
