Johnny Gaudreau's wife Meredith celebrates their third wedding anniversary six days after his death: “I love you forever”

The NHL star and his brother Matthew Gaudreau were killed in a bicycle accident last Thursday, one day before their sister's wedding in New Jersey.

Johnny Gaudreau's widow Meredith Gaudreau released a heartfelt tribute to her late husband in honor of the couple's third wedding anniversary, less than a week after his tragic death in a bicycle accident along with his brother Matthew Gaudreau.

“I never post this much but John deserves it,” Meredith wrote on Wednesday, September 4, alongside a carousel of photos of her and her late husband over the years.

“3 years ago today I became yours forever. One of the best days of my life, including the night we got engaged and the days we had our babies. The day I met you I said to myself, 'Oh my God, I'm going to marry him.' And every day after that just got better and better. I love you forever John and I'm so proud to be your wife.”

Johnny, an NHL star who played 11 seasons for the Columbus Blue Jackets and Calgary Flames, was killed along with his brother Matthew last Thursday night when a suspected drunk driver plowed into them as they rode bicycles in Oldsmans Township, New Jersey, near their hometown of Salem County, New Jersey.

Johnny was 31. Matthew was 29.

Johnny and Matthew were in town to serve as best men at their sister Katie's wedding, which was to take place the next day.

According to New Jersey State Police, the driver, Sean M. Higgins, has since been arrested and charged with two counts of vehicular manslaughter after police say he was believed to be under the influence of alcohol when he fatally struck the Gaudreau siblings after attempting to pass another vehicle. Higgins is being held without bail, jail records show.

Johnny and his wife Meredith have two children together: daughter Noa, who will turn 2 in October, and son Johnny, who is 7 months old.

Matthew and his wife Madeline were expecting their first child together, already named Tripp, later this year. As of Wednesday morning, donations for Madeline and the couple's unborn baby had reached nearly $600,000 on a GoFundMe page set up to support the family.

Meredith has made several posts over the past few days paying tribute to her late husband and brother-in-law.

“Thank you for the best years of my life. Even though I lost you, I'm still the luckiest girl in the world because I was yours. I love you so much,” Meredith wrote last Saturday in her first post since her husband's death.

“You were perfect,” she added. “Some days it felt too good to be true. I love everything about you. You are mine forever and I can't wait to be with you again. I love you so much, always and forever.”
