Atlanta United has parted ways with its Vice President and Technical Director Carlos Bocanegrawho helped build the club's trophy-winning squads in the first few seasons after his appointment in 2015. President of Atlanta United Garth Lagerwey “will assume Bocanegra's duties.” Under Bocanegra, Atlanta United won the MLS Cup in 2018 and the US Open Cup and Campeones Cup in 2019. Since then, the club has neither won a playoff series nor made it to the final of a tournament (ATLANTA JOURNAL-CONSTITUTION, 9/4).

Lagerwey spoke to the media after the move and noted that the club that had fired the coach Gonzalo Pineda in June, the third such coach hired by Bocanegra and fired mid-season – will not have the new coach take on the GM role and the positions “will be kept separate.” He added that “the ideal GM must have MLS experience.” Lagerwey confirmed that the coaching search is “ongoing” and will happen first, after which he will hire a GM. He added that the GM will be responsible for the salary cap, contracts, player selection and “all off-field stuff.” Lagerwey also noted that the GM “will be hired from the outside” (X, 9/4).
