Convicted footballer Quincy Promes continues his playing career in Dubai

Quincy Promes has found his next team in Dubai. The striker has signed a one-season contract with United FC Dubai, which plays in the United Arab Emirates' second division. Russian media had already reported that the Amsterdam player would sign with FC Dubai. Promes is currently awaiting possible extradition to the Netherlands on charges of drug trafficking and a stabbing.

His new club announced on social media that they were making a major signing and attached a photo of Promes. Promes' contract was expiring. Russian club Spartak Moscow reported in early June that the contract of the former Ajax, FC Twente, Go Ahead Eagles and Sevilla player had expired.

The 50-times capped Dutch international has been convicted twice in the Netherlands. He was sentenced to six years in prison for cocaine trafficking and one and a half years for a knife attack on his cousin. The public prosecutor wants him to serve his sentence in the Netherlands and requested his extradition to Dubai in March.

The striker has not been allowed to leave the United Arab Emirates since February, when he attended a training camp there with his club Spartak Moscow. He is awaiting a decision on a possible extradition.

A striking clause was included in Promes' contract with United FC Dubai. The attacker is allowed to return to Spartak Moscow if he is allowed to leave the United Arab Emirates.
