“This comes as a shock to the diocese as many will know Steve, who only retired at the end of last year after serving us in many roles for over 35 years, most recently as Vicar of St James, Fletchamstead for 19 years.

“Steve was a beloved member of our diocese and was known for his good humor and unwavering faith. Many also know Kathy well through her work with CPAS (Church Pastoral Aid Society) and her church service.

“As a couple, they have been very active this year, even in retirement, running an Alpha course leading to baptism and confirmation. Our thoughts and prayers are with Steve and Kathy's family at this time, especially their children David, Jonathan and Sarah, who are dealing with this devastating, unexpected loss.”

A bystander who watched the incident from a hotel said he heard a series of “loud bangs” and saw bystanders attempting to perform CPR.

“The city is absolutely full of tourists and people walk down this street,” she said of the area. “It's just a beautiful place.”
