HONOLULU—A man arrested on suspicion of murder after shooting a neighbor who opened fire at a gathering in Hawaii has been released from custody. It is not yet clear whether he will face charges, police said Tuesday.

Three people were killed and two others injured in a shooting at a home in Waianae, a community in western Oahu, on Saturday night over a dispute between neighbors. The gunman was also shot by a local resident who was arrested on second-degree murder charges, police said.

On Saturday night, a family was having a party in a carport when a 58-year-old neighbor rammed cars into the carport with a front loader and opened fire, police said. Three women were killed. The 42-year-old man who lived in the house where the party was taking place shot the 58-year-old with a pistol, police said.

Philip Ganaban, chairman of the Waianae Coast Neighborhood Board, said he knew the families from both of the affected homes. He was still trying to understand what happened Tuesday. The man who opened fire on the gathering was known as a family man, Ganaban said.

“We still wonder what could appeal to him so much,” Said Ganaban. “He made a bad decision.”

The 58-year-old was known for renting out space on his property for parties, Ganaban said. Earlier in the evening, some people at the gathering had been concerned that people might rent the space and “The tires burn when the cars drive up and down the road,” Said Ganaban.

Then, police said, he used heavy equipment and four 200-liter drums of unknown fuel to ram vehicles into the carport cluster.
