Four dead in serious accident in Luwero

Four people lost their lives instantly and six others were seriously injured when a truck unexpectedly reversing collided with a taxi on the Kampala-Gulu Highway in Luwero district early Monday morning.

The tragic incident occurred at around 5am in Nakazzi village in Luwero Local Council, Sam Twiineamazima, police spokesperson in the Savannah region, confirmed.

The truck, whose identity has not yet been established, was travelling from Kampala when it rammed the driver's side of a Toyota Hiace taxi coming from Gulu.

Among those killed in the accident was 43-year-old Moses Kitata, a taxi driver and resident of Wobulenzi community in Luwero district.

The identities of the other three victims were still unknown on Wednesday afternoon.

“We are actively searching for the truck driver responsible for this tragic accident,” Twiineamazima told reporters.

The bodies of the deceased were taken to the Luwero Hospital morgue for autopsy, while the injured were also being treated at the same facility, police said.

“Upon receiving reports of the accident, the police immediately responded and registered a fatal accident. Forensic officers visited the scene to document evidence and statements from relevant witnesses were taken,” Twiineamazima added.

At press time, the damaged taxi was being towed to Luwero Central Police Station for further investigation. Police have not yet released the exact cause of the accident.

According to the 2023 Annual Police Crime Report, an average of 25 people are murdered or killed in road accidents in Uganda every day.
