Former Wolves striker Rafa Mir has been brought to court after being arrested on suspicion of sexually abusing a 25-year-old woman.

The 27-year-old, who recently moved to Valencia on loan from Sevilla, spent the last two days in police custody.

Mir was photographed on Wednesday morning in a grey camouflaged vehicle of the Spanish Guardia Civil as he was taken to the Lliria court in Valencia to appear before a judge.

As the Spanish newspaper Marca reported, his lawyer Jaime Campaner appeared in court on Wednesday morning and stated that the relationship was “without a doubt” consensual.

The report adds that Mir's father also visited the player to bring him some personal items.

On Tuesday, the Guardia Civil confirmed the arrest of a LaLiga footballer, but denied Spanish media reports that a second man was currently in custody.

A Valencia police spokesman said: “We can confirm that a LaLiga footballer has been arrested for an alleged sexual assault.”

“No one else has been arrested at this time, but that may change later.”

He added: “The arrested man is currently in police custody.”

A source familiar with the investigation said: “Under Spanish law, the police have 72 hours from the time of arrest to keep him in custody. Only then can they release him or hand him over to a judge, who has the right to question him further and then decide in principle whether to release him on bail or remand him in custody pending the outcome of the investigation.”

The Guardia Civil did not provide any information about the type of sexual assault alleged or whether the women claimed they had been raped.

However, Marca's report claims that a “friend of the footballer” was arrested a day after Mir for an alleged sexual assault reported by a 21-year-old woman.

Valencia Football Club said in a statement: “With regard to the press reports on the arrest of Valencia CF player Rafa Mir, the club is aware of the arrest and, in the absence of further details, can only state at this stage that it will fully cooperate with any requests from the courts.”

Spanish media reported that the alleged sexual assault occurred during a private party at the footballer's house after the two were invited to the party following a meeting at a nightclub.

Cadena Ser said local police were initially called to the house to deal with reports of a possible altercation and to break up the party before she left.

It was not immediately clear today whether the sex crime allegations were made while officers were in the home or after they left.

Mir, full name Rafael Mir Vicente, won the 2019 European Championship with the Spanish U21 football team and a silver medal with the Olympic team at the 2020 tournament.

In January 2018, he signed a four-and-a-half-year contract with Wolves and was given the number 9 shirt, teaming up with former Valencia head coach Nuno Espirito Santo.

During his time at Wolves, he was loaned to Las Palmas and Nottingham Forest, leaving the club permanently in August 2021 when he signed a six-year contract with Sevilla.

In July he returned to his youth club Valencia on loan.
