The district council elections began on Wednesday at the Delhi Municipal Corporation headquarters amid heavy security.

The long-pending elections will be held in 2022 for the first time after the unification of the MCD. Due to the political stalemate between the ruling AAP and the opposition BJP, the elections could not take place and the matter was adjourned in the court.

Anticipating a confrontation between the two parties, police have increased security in and around the Civic Centre in central Delhi.

A company of paramilitary forces was deployed on site together with the local police.

In this vote, council members will elect a chair and vice-chair for ten of the twelve district committees at the zone level, as well as one member each for the standing committee, the highest decision-making body of the MCD.

Elections to form district committees in two zones – City SP and Keshav Puram – will not be held as neither BJP nor AAP have filed nominations.

Voting will be conducted in two groups of all MCD zones simultaneously, with councillors from five zones voting together while the remaining zones will vote separately.

The MCD zones of Rohini, Najafgarh, West, South and Central will vote between 10 am and 4 pm on the first floor of the agency headquarters at Hansraj Gupta Auditorium.

The remaining five zones – Karol Bagh, Shahdara South, Shahdara North, Civil Lines and Narela – will vote simultaneously at the Satya Narayan Bansal Auditorium on the second floor.

The election will be held by secret ballot under the Delhi Municipal Corporation Regulations, 1958.

City councilors from both parties hoped for a smooth election process.

“We are confident that the election will be peaceful and the district committee will be formed,” said BJP councillor Yogesh Verma.

Some also expressed concerns about the election results.

“I don't know what will happen. These BJP people can do anything. The LG is constantly giving us trouble. What can we do? We are helpless. They have put the chief minister in jail…” said Amrit Jain, AAP councillor from Budh Vihar.
