Deputy Police Officer Maher Husseini was fatally shot in Houston while driving to work in his private car.

A tragic incident occurred in Houston on Tuesday when Deputy Police Officer Maher Husseini was fatally shot in his personal car while on his way to work. According to police reports, the shooting occurred when a man approached Husseini's car at an intersection and fired several shots before fleeing the scene.

Suspect arrested after chase

The suspect in this violent attack led authorities on a dramatic chase that ended about 60 miles away in the waters off Galveston. After crashing his vehicle, the suspect attempted to evade capture by swimming. He was eventually captured with the help of a marine unit from the Port of Galveston Police Department.

Identification of the victim and determination of the motive

The slain deputy was identified as Maher Husseini, who had served as a Harris County police officer since 2021. Houston Police Chief J. Noe Diaz said investigators are working to determine the motive for the shooting and whether Husseini was specifically targeted.

Diaz mentioned that road rage is among the possible motives being investigated. “It's a terrible thing for the community when someone loses their life, someone who has dedicated their life to public service,” Diaz noted. “It's absolutely tragic.”

Details of the shooting and the aftermath

Preliminary information indicates that Husseini was not wearing a uniform at the time of the shooting. At the scene, bullet holes were visible in the passenger window of Husseini's SUV. Although he was taken to a Houston hospital, he was pronounced dead on arrival, according to Harris County 4th Precinct Police Detective Mark Herman.

Arrest of the suspect and reactions

Authorities have not yet released the name of the arrested suspect. After the shooting, Galveston Port Police reported that the suspect led officers on a chase that ended in an accident. He then attempted to escape by swimming, but was later found in the water and arrested. The suspect was subsequently taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott condemned the act, saying: “The dangerous criminal who attacked and murdered Deputy Police Officer Husseini will be punished to the fullest extent of the law.”

The investigation into this case is ongoing as law enforcement agencies try to determine the motive behind it.
