Sky vs Aces Predictions, Tips & Odds – 9-3

Angel Reese just set the WNBA record for most rebounds in a season and now faces the clear favorite for MVP, A'ja Wilson. Our free WNBA picks don't trust the Chi-Barbie to dominate the game. See more below.

The WNBA's best player has been putting up massive points lately, with A'ja Wilson hitting 40 twice in the Las Vegas Aces' last three games. Meanwhile, Chicago Sky rookie Angel Reese just set the WNBA record for rebounds in a season, breaking Sylvia Fowles' 2018 record in two fewer games.

While my Sky vs. Aces predictions give a hint as to the topic of this article, my WNBA picks for Tuesday, September 3 may not be what you expected.

Predictions for Sky vs Aces

My best bet
A'ja Wilson Over 12.5 rebounds (+106 at FanDuel)

My analysis
A'ja Wilson is saving the Las Vegas Aces' season and keeping hopes alive for their third straight victory. They have won three of their last four games, thanks in no small part to Wilson averaging 32.25 points and 14.25 rebounds per game over the last week.

Las Vegas needs every win it can get, as they are one game away from losing home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs. Chasing back-to-back titles has been tough enough; not having home-court advantage in the first round will make it even tougher.

Wilson has been more consistently dominant at the basket than on the scoreboard this week since the Olympic break and, frankly, all season. She has surpassed that high mark three times in the last four games, averaging 12 rebounds since the Olympic break. Let's explain this trend a little further: Wilson has grabbed 13 or more rebounds in eight of her last 12 games, averaging 13.8 rebounds.

One might hesitate to trust anyone against Angel Reese and the Chicago Sky, but with all due respect to Reese — and anyone who disrespects her has clearly missed the rookie's outstanding development this season — Wilson will still be grabbing plenty of rebounds tonight.

These teams have met three times this season. Wilson has grabbed 14 and 18 rebounds in the last two games, including a week ago to kick off this strong stretch. She should always be trusted to find misses, if only because she dictates those terms in Las Vegas' rotation. Wilson has grabbed 19.9% of available rebounds in her 1,096 minutes this season. Of the Aces players with more than 300 minutes played, only Kiah Stokes (572 minutes) has found more than 9% of available rebounds, a strong 14.8%.

This is where Wilson's strength against the Sky comes in. Chicago ranks 10th in offensive rating over the last two months – a month of games if you include the Olympic break – but over the same period, the Sky have only converted 42.8% of their shots, 9th in the WNBA.

There will be plenty of misses in Las Vegas on Tuesday night, and no one, not even Angel Reese, is better at collecting them than A'ja Wilson.

Reese doesn't get enough credit. In 32 games, she grabbed 418 rebounds, a WNBA single-season record. Some critics say she could have done that in a longer season, and yes, this WNBA season will be 40 games long. It will. Reese hasn't played them all yet. The record of 404 was set by Sylvia Fowles in 2018 in 34 games.

Reese achieved this record in such a short period of time because she has been a force since her break during the Olympics. Reese and fellow rookie Caitlin Clark had been playing significant basketball since November. They needed a moment to breathe. They were exhausted. Since that break, Reese has grabbed 19 or more rebounds in four of nine games, including 15 in the fifth game.

But in her three games against Wilson and the Aces, Reese had “only” grabbed 11 and 10 rebounds before her 22-rebound performance last week. This is Wilson's chance for revenge.

And as such a clear favorite with the continued motivation to get into the seedings, Las Vegas should win the game early and keep the lead no matter how Reese plays.

Opening odds for Sky vs Aces

  • Spread: Chicago +11.5 | Las Vegas -11.5
  • Money line: Chicago +490 | Las Vegas -750
  • Over/Under: Over 164.5 | Under 164.5

Sky vs Aces spread and over/under analysis

  • That spread opened late Sunday with a lead of 11.5 at Las Vegas and rose to -12 and even -13 at some bookmakers on Monday afternoon.
  • The Aces had lost nine straight games against the spread before winning their last two and perhaps finally turning the corner to the expected competency, just maybe.
  • The total was 164.5 late Sunday and rose to 166 on Monday afternoon, parallel to the range.

Sky vs Aces Trend

Chicago has lost six games in a row and is just 1-6 since the Olympic break. That can be attributed in part to the transfer of Mabrina Mabrey during the break, in part to Chennedy Carter being out because of COVID, and in part perhaps to the Sky seeing a reason to drop out of the WNBA playoffs to chase UConn superstar Paige Bueckers.
