Charges filed in connection with stabbing in laundry room

ENDICOTT (WBNG) — The Broome County Sheriff's Office has filed charges in the investigation of a stabbing at Bornt Hill Apartments in the Town of Union on Sept. 2.

The Sheriff's Office charged 32-year-old Janzer J. Canelo of Endicott with aggravated assault for stabbing a victim twice in the chest.

On September 2nd at around 6 p.m., the Sheriff's Office, New York State Police and Endicott Police Department responded to the apartment complex on Bornt Hill Road for a reported stabbing.

When police arrived, they found the victim lying in the parking lot. Two witnesses administered first aid. Officers performed life-saving measures until emergency responders arrived. On Tuesday afternoon, the sheriff's office reported that the victim remained in critical condition.

Canelo and the victim were both residents of the apartment complex and had an argument over laundry, the office said. The office found that the argument escalated into a physical altercation in the laundry room, which led to the stabbing.

“Outstanding work by our deputies who immediately performed life-saving measures until emergency services arrived and helped save the life of the victim of this senseless crime,” said Sheriff Fred Akshar.

Canelo was transported to the Central Arraignment Part for arraignment. He remains in custody at the Broome County Correctional Facility.
