El Paso man convicted of fatal drunk driving accident that left one person dead and two injured

An El Paso man was convicted in July 2023 of causing a crash while drunk that left a 70-year-old man dead and two people injured.

On August 12, 50-year-old Jorge Escajeda Salinas was found guilty and sentenced for driving while intoxicated, causing a crash in west El Paso that killed 72-year-old Alva Aida Razo, court records show.

Salinas was convicted of the following charges:

  • Manslaughter while intoxicated with a vehicle – 18 years
  • An accident resulting in death – 18 years
  • Bodily harm under the influence of alcohol with a vehicle – 10 years

KFOX14/CBS4 has reached out to the courts to find out if the sentences will be served concurrently.

The incident occurred on July 22, 2023 at approximately 7:30 p.m. at the intersection of 4800 N. Desert Blvd. and 7600 N. Mesa St.

According to authorities, Salinas was driving a gray 2011 Mercedes C300 when he collided with three other vehicles that were waiting for the light to turn from red to green.

Witnesses told police that after the accident, Salinas was packing up his belongings to flee the scene before he was stopped by passersby.

According to police records, Salinas stated that after leaving his job in Horizon City, he was followed by cars on Loop 375 and that these people attacked him after the accident, causing him to try to flee.

Police records described Salinasas as smelling of alcohol, having “a white coating on his lips, a white coating coming from his nose” and “sweating excessively” despite the patrol unit's air conditioning being on full blast.

Police also said that while Salinas was locked in the back seat of a patrol car, he told officers, “Kill me, kill me.”
