MLB insider: It would be a ‘surprise’ if the Seattle Mariners fired Jerry Dipoto

According to MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic, it would be a “disappointment” if the Seattle Mariners fired Jerry Dipoto in the offseason.

Several fans want this and have been clamoring for it, clamoring for Dipoto to leave the organization, just as longtime manager Scott Servais did just two weeks ago.

Rosenthal wrote a very insightful article on Tuesday detailing how owners walk the tightrope between team success and financial success. In it, he said that most teams won't make any changes in management as long as the company's revenue is good.

Regarding the Mariners, he said:

The Mariners are run by another sluggish owner, John Stanton. They made a big breakthrough in 2022, ending a 21-year postseason drought, then the longest in professional sports. But what have they done in the two seasons since? They were criticized by catcher Cal Raleigh for not spending enough. They led the majors in strikeouts for the second year in a row despite trading away part of their strikeout-prone roster. And on Aug. 23, they replaced manager Scott Servais with a popular former player, Dan Wilson.

The team has lost since then (5-4) and still has no chance of making the playoffs, having lost the majors' best pitchers. President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto is finishing his ninth season. His sloppy handling of Servais' firing has only added to fans' frustration. But he seems to retain Stanton's faith, and it would be a surprise if the team started over.

It should be noted that the team is now 5-5 under Wilson after another loss on Monday night.

Dipoto is in his ninth year with the Mariners. So far, his tenure has yielded one playoff berth and one playoff series win. The team came close in 2018, 2021 and 2023, but each time failed to make the playoffs in the final week of the season.

Seattle is 69-69 and will decline incredibly quickly here in 2024, which is why so many fans want to see different faces at key positions.
