Italian car manager dies in tragic climbing accident

Fabrizio Longo, a respected manager at Audi and avid mountaineer, tragically lost his life on August 31, 2024 while tackling the challenging Via Ferrata on Cima Payer in Italy's Adamello Mountains. Born on March 12, 1962 in Rimini, Italy, the 62-year-old was known for his remarkable leadership in the automotive industry and his great passion for climbing.

Longo began his career in the automotive sector in 1987 at Fiat and rose quickly to become head of the Lancia brand in 2002. His tenure at Audi began in 2012 and in 2013 he was appointed head of Audi Italy. Under his leadership, Audi Italy achieved an impressive performance: it was able to maintain its leadership position in the premium segment for 11 consecutive years and significantly increase market share and customer satisfaction. Markus Duesmann, Chairman of the Board of Management of Audi AG, expressed his deep sadness at Longo's death and stated: “Fabrizio was a remarkable leader whose contributions to Audi and the automotive industry will never be forgotten.”

The incident occurred while Longo was climbing alone, a decision that ultimately led to his tragic fall. Another climber saw Longo lose his footing and fall about 210 meters into a ravine. Despite the quick response of a rescue helicopter, he was found dead at the scene. This heartbreaking event has caused an uproar in the automotive industry, with colleagues and industry leaders expressing their condolences.

Longo's legacy extends beyond his professional achievements; he was a popular figure known for his integrity, culture, skills and sensitivity.
