73-year-old dies 2 weeks after shooting on Gay Drive

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WRDW/WAGT) – A 73-year-old man died just over two weeks after he was shot on Gay Drive earlier this month, the Richmond County Coroner told us Tuesday.

Richmond County Coroner Mark Bowen said Larry Drayton was shot at least once in the 1900 block of Gay Drive on August 9 and was taken to Wellstar/MCG by emergency medical services.

Drayton was later transferred to Pruitt Healthcare Nursing Facility, where he was pronounced dead at 9:31 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 26, Bowen said.

Bowen told us Tuesday that an autopsy had been performed and there was no further information at this time.

The shooting occurred in the midst of a Outbreak of violent crime that left more than 170 people dead across the CSRA in just over two years.

The crime wave affected communities large and small, but as the region's largest city, Augusta was hit particularly hard.

The authorities have blamed gangs for the problem.
