Victim identified after fatal accident in Silver Lake State Park

MEARS, Michigan – The Oceana County Sheriff's Office has released additional information shedding light on the accident that killed a 20-year-old Coopersville man at Silver Lake State Park Sunday evening.

Braden VanPutten was riding an ATV on an off-road vehicle area between Lake Michigan and what dune enthusiasts call “Sunset Hill,” officials say, when he collided with a side-by-side vehicle carrying a 36-year-old driver and a 14-year-old passenger.

The dispatch center reported that the 20-year-old was unconscious and not breathing when the emergency call came in. When officers arrived, park rangers were performing CPR, but VanPutten died at the scene.

The teenager was taken to Trinity Health Mercy Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“We do not believe alcohol or drugs played a role in this accident. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of this tragedy,” the Oceana County Sheriff's Office told FOX 17 in a press release sent Tuesday morning.

This is the second ATV-related death at Silver Lake State Park this year. Kadie Price, 33, was killed over Memorial Day weekend when the driver of another vehicle lost control and collided with hers.
