Student who stabbed colleague at O'Reilly SHS arrested

The suspect who stabbed an O'Reilly Senior High School senior to death on Monday has been arrested.

The deceased, Edward Borketey Sackey, reportedly died on Monday, September 2, after being stabbed in the chest during an altercation with a classmate.

The victim, 18-year-old Edward Sackey, was a student in the school's General Arts faculty.

The incident occurred on campus after a fight broke out between Edward and Godwin, a fellow student from the Faculty of Fine Arts, shortly after the deceased had finished an exam.

Edward's cousin reported that the argument arose from an argument over an issue, explaining, “We heard a noise from behind and asked what was going on and they said that Godwin and Edward were arguing.”

“I asked what the argument was about and they said it was nothing serious.”

According to Accra-based broadcaster 3News, Edward was stabbed three times in the chest during an argument over who was richer.

“The whole thing was about you, what's wrong? I have this and that, you're lying. That was the reason for the argument. So I thought the whole thing was nothing.”

Meanwhile, the family of a graduating student is demanding justice.

In an interview with Accra-based broadcaster TV3, the deceased's father accused the school's teachers of negligence.

He says his niece called him earlier in the day and invited him to campus when the fight started.

He said he did not initially understand the reason for the call as teachers had a responsibility to prevent it. However, he made his way to the school in Accra to understand what was happening.

The angry father and other family members dressed in red and black clothing demonstrated in front of the school grounds on Tuesday to express their displeasure.

He added that neither the school administration, the attacker's family nor the police had contacted them about the situation.

“We want answers from the school administration, the boy's parents and the police. What happened that the student stabbed his friend? That's all we want. We want justice, and we want the school administration to explain to us whether the teachers were not at the school when it happened, or whether they were there, or whether they didn't care.”

He added that the administration had invited police officers to prevent them from entering the campus.

“They brought police officers to block all the gates and prevent us from going in.”

In an earlier report, Edward's cousin had stated that the fight resulted from an argument over an issue. “We heard noise from behind and asked what was going on. They said Godwin and Edward were arguing,” he explained.

“I asked what the argument was about and they said it was nothing serious.”
