I-176 southbound in southern Berks closed after rig carrying 43,000 pounds of sugar overturns

Following an accident involving a semi-trailer truck this morning, southbound Interstate 176 remains closed at the Green Hills exit.

According to emergency dispatch, a truck carrying nearly 20,000 kilograms of sugar in bags overturned on the southbound lanes about two miles north of the Honey Brook exit (Route 10/23) in Robeson Township shortly before 5 a.m. A fire chief reported that some diesel fuel had spilled, but the sugar was still in the container trailer.

Firefighters contained the spill and called PennDOT to assist with cleanup. As of 10:30 a.m., crews were still working to remove the tractor-trailer from the road.

To allow the movement of emergency vehicles, the northbound lanes will be reduced to a single lane.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
