Dallas: Police officer shot in incident that left colleague dead, still recovering

Days after three police officers were shot in Dallas, one of them fatally, few details have been released about the two injured officers.

On Thursday night, Dallas police officer Darron Burks was sitting in his marked patrol car in Oak Cliff between assignments when he was “executed,” police said. Without knowing exactly what had happened, senior officers Jamie Farmer and Karissa David were dispatched to assist.

They arrived at the scene within 10 minutes and were shot by suspect Corey Cobb-Bey, Dallas Police Chief Eddie García said. Farmer, who was shot in the leg, returned fire and fled. David was shot in the face as she got out of her vehicle but also returned fire, the police chief said.

All three officers were taken to hospitals, where Burks, 46, died. David's condition is critical but stable, while Farmer was treated and released, the police chief said Friday evening.

According to records from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement, David and Farmer have both worked as Dallas police officers for over 5 years. In 2022, David was honored by the Sons of American Revolution for saving a man who crashed into a pole in 2020, according to a post on X.

David, 27, attended Evangel University, a private Christian university in Springfield, Missouri, according to Texas Commission on Law Enforcement records. A Facebook post asking for prayers said she played soccer there.

A classmate of David's from high school said that in her small graduating class, everyone wanted to be friends with David because she was a “girly girl.”

Lindsey Clements, who said she attended Washtenaw Christian Academy in Michigan with David, remembered her especially for her intelligence and said she took nearly every advanced course the school offered. Clements said she and David recently reconnected and planned to meet again when Clements came to Dallas in October.

“The only thing I care about right now is that she recovers and that she's OK,” Clements said. “I know she just got engaged. I can't imagine how traumatic this is for her fiancé and her family.”

According to Texas Commission on Law Enforcement records, Farmer, 35, attended Tennessee State University.

A Facebook account possibly linked to Farmer changed its profile picture on Saturday to a police badge over the Dallas skyline, the same image García posted the morning after the shooting. In the comments, people expressed support and prayed for Farmer.

“Holy cow. I'm glad you're feeling better,” read one comment.
