Poured over with petrol and set on fire

Drama surrounding Rebecca Cheptegei from Uganda! The athlete, who competed for her country at the Olympic Games in Paris, was the victim of a serious crime.

According to police, the 33-year-old was attacked in her home in Kenya by her boyfriend Dickson Ndiema Marangach and is now in hospital with severe burns.

As the police further explained, the long-distance runner, who finished 44th in the marathon at the Olympic Games in Paris, was doused with petrol and set on fire by her Kenyan boyfriend. Her health condition is serious, said a hospital employee. According to media reports, 75 percent of her skin surface is burned.

Marangach had previously sneaked into his girlfriend's house while she was visiting a church with the children. When she returned, the attack took place.

Marangach suffered burns during the attack. Neighbours reportedly rescued the two and took them to hospital. It is not known whether Cheptegei's children were injured.

Why Marangach poured gasoline on his partner is not yet known.

The Uganda Athletics Federation expressed its dismay at the incident, saying Cheptegei had suffered “serious injuries”: “This followed an incident in which her Kenyan boyfriend doused her with petrol and set her on fire,” the federation wrote on X.
