1 man found dead, 2 still missing after boat crashes into jetty

OLD SAYBROOK, Connecticut (WFSB/Gray News) – Officials say one man was found dead and two others are missing after a boat crashed into a pier in Connecticut.

The Coast Guard reports that a boat with nine people on board crashed into a dock on the Connecticut River at high speed. The distress call was received around 9 p.m. on Monday, WFSB reported.

A single, partially submerged motorboat was found near Harbor One Marina in Old Saybrook. The boat had significant damage.

Six people – one man and five women aged between mid-20s and 30s – were rescued. They were all taken to hospital.

Authorities began searching for three missing men who were reportedly not wearing life jackets.

According to officials with the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, one of the missing men was found dead during the search early Tuesday.

The search for the two remaining victims, both in their 20s, was suspended until sunrise, officials say.

The Guilford dive team responded along with boats, personnel and ambulances from surrounding towns and worked to locate and assist the missing persons.

The Coast Guard also sent a helicopter from Cape Cod to assist in the search efforts.
