KIEV – At least 41 people were killed and more than 180 injured when Russia attacked a military institute in the central Russian city of Poltava on Tuesday, President Volodymyr Zelensky said, in one of the deadliest single attacks of the war.

In a video, Zelensky said Russian forces had attacked with two ballistic missiles, damaging a building at the Military Institute of Communications.

He added that he had ordered a full and immediate investigation into the circumstances of the attack.

“The Russian scum will definitely be held accountable for this attack,” Zelensky said via the messaging app Telegram.

He reiterated his call for stronger Western air defenses and urged allies to allow the use of their long-range weapons to strike deeper into Russian territory to protect Ukraine.

“We say to everyone in the world who has the power to stop this terror: air defense systems and missiles are needed in Ukraine, not in some warehouse.

“Long-range strikes that can protect us from Russian terror are needed now, not later. Unfortunately, every day of delay means loss of life.”
