Miami Dolphins make move to Chris Brooks

Running back Chris Brooks is now a free agent.

The Miami Dolphins released Brooks on Monday due to injury-related severance pay, allowing him to sign with any team.

Brooks could extend his contract with the Dolphins if there was mutual interest, but league rules state that this would not be possible until at least three weeks have passed, plus the number of weeks equal to the amount of severance pay he was awarded.

For practical reasons, this is a situation that almost never occurs.

Brooks' attempt to make the active roster this summer ended when he was waived/injured last week as part of the team's reduction to the 53-player limit.

Brooks had been practicing after being placed in concussion protocol after suffering a hit during the preseason win over the Washington Commanders, a few plays after he made a 59-yard run.

After joining us as an undrafted free agent from BYU in 2023, Brooks showed intriguing potential from the start and also brought the size that the Dolphins' running back corps lacks.

Brooks made the 53-man roster last year and although his playing time was limited, he scored a 52-yard run in the historic win over the Denver Broncos in Week 3 and a 28-yard run in the win over the Carolina Panthers in Week 6.

But he suffered a leg injury in that game against Carolina that landed him on the injured list. The Dolphins thought enough of him to call him back, and he played three more games in the closing stages, despite having only three rushing attempts.

The signing of rookie Jaylen Wright, drafted in the fourth round, made Brooks' plans to expand the roster that much more difficult, especially with the experienced Jeff Wilson Jr. having a strong training camp.
