A perfect example of this strategy is the “Police Academy” series: In the first part, chaos makers like Carey (Steve Guttenberg) drive their instructors (including GW Bailey) crazy. That's really funny. But this success was followed by six sequels and two TV series that became increasingly less funny and worse. And yet it continues: a reboot of the series is currently in the works.
