Measures taken against 35 industries because of child labour – myRepublica

BAGMATI, September 3: Action was taken against a total of 35 industrial establishments and employers for using child labour in the last financial year 2023-24.

The Labour and Employment Department, Hetauda, ​​penalised the industries and their employees as they were found to be using child labour, which is illegal. The department carried out monitoring of a total of 95 industries.

Bureau chief Chhanda Narayan Shrestha said the industry and individual employers had been fined over Rs 400,000.

In addition, 35 children were rescued from the industries during the same period.

Most of the violations of children's rights came from large-scale industry. In addition, there were other problems with employment letters, remuneration, social and physical safety.

Industries were also directed to reform their management and working practices to ensure workers' rights and end child labour.

Hotels, industrial and craft enterprises were monitored by the government.

The office has previously received complaints about unpaid remuneration. Last year, a total of 79 complaints were filed, 60 of which were resolved through discussions. Settlement is currently being requested for the remaining 19.

The office also conducted an awareness programme against child labour in Makwanpur, Chitwan and Sindhuli districts.
