30 dead in torrential rains in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, road and rail traffic disrupted

Heavy rains and the resulting floods in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana have disrupted normal life in the two southern states. At least 30 people have died in the rain-related incidents.

The chief ministers of both states urged the central government to declare the floods a national disaster. Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu said the rain and the subsequent floods were the “biggest disaster” he had witnessed in his political career.

Naidu said that the Prakasam dam in Vijayawada witnessed its highest flood level, recording a discharge of 11.43 lakh cubic feet per second. The dam was designed to withstand a maximum of 11.9 lakh cubic feet per second of flood.

Although the low pressure area crossed the coast of Andhra Pradesh near Kalingapatnam in the northern part of the state, the highest rainfall occurred in NTR and Guntur districts.

The Telangana state government estimated the damage at Rs 5,000 crore and requested the central government for immediate assistance of Rs 2,000 crore.

Due to heavy rains and flooding on the tracks at several points on the network, 432 trains were cancelled on the South Central Railway (SCR), 13 trains partially cancelled. Some of the gravel under the tracks near Kesamudram was previously washed away by floodwaters.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast heavy rain at isolated places in Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Sangareddy, Medak and Kamareddy districts on September 3.
