Total number of injured rises to 34, says community doctor

Bahraich (Uttar Pradesh) [India]September 3 (ANI): The total number of people who sustained injuries in the suspected wolf attacks in Bahraich district of Uttar Pradesh has risen to 34, a doctor at the Community Health Centre in Mahasi said on Tuesday.

Speaking to ANI, Mahasi Community Health Centre director Dr Ashish Verma said, “We have a list of a total of 34 people injured in animal attacks. All of them have been treated while two of them have been referred to the district hospital in Bahraich. We have enquired about their situation, both are stable.” Asked if adequate facilities are available at the CHC, Dr Verma said, “We have all the basic necessities at the CHC to treat the injured persons. As per the orders of the Chief Minister's office, we have enough ARBs and ASBs available at the CHC to treat the patients. Since it is a flood-affected area, there are many cases of snake bites, so we have sufficient supplies of these medicines.” The Uttar Pradesh Police and the Forest Department are continuing their search for two wolves under 'Operation Bhediya' in Bahraich district. The Forest Department had earlier caught four wolves. The wolf pack is said to be behind several attacks on villagers in the region.

On Monday evening, a five-year-old girl was injured in another suspected wolf attack in the same area. The girl is currently receiving treatment at the Mahasi Community Health Centre.

The girl was sleeping at home next to her grandmother when she was suddenly attacked by a wolf. However, the quick intervention of her family members and neighbors saved her life.

Kalim, one of the girl's neighbors, told ANI that when they heard the family's screams, they immediately went to rescue them and chase the wolf, but the wolf managed to escape from the village. He also told that it was the first time a wolf came to their village.

ADG of Gorakhpur zone KS Pratap Kumar said, “Under a special strategy, the forest department is running a programme in which the police department is also involved. The entire area has been divided into seven teams. Each gram panchayat is also getting a police team. We will surely get success soon.” On Monday, another wolf attack killed a three-year-old girl and injured two other women, sparking anger among locals who accused the administration of negligence in its work.
