The police are now looking for witnesses after the knife attack in which a 28-year-old man was injured in Heilbronn city center on Friday evening. Near the Experimenta, a man attacked the passerby, who was out with his wife, with a knife. The husband was slightly injured. The suspected 26-year-old perpetrator, whom the man was able to arrest shortly afterwards, is now being investigated for attempted murder. He is in custody.

Knife attack in Heilbronn: Background still unclear

The suspected perpetrator was already known to the police, also because of an official accusation of bodily harm. So far, they assume that the couple and the 26-year-old suspect could not have introduced themselves beforehand.

The incident occurred in the area of ​​the Adolf Cluss Bridge. The couple reportedly collided with the suspect and his companion. According to the public prosecutor's office, an argument broke out. The 26-year-old pulled out the knife and is said to have stabbed his victim in the face. The man tried to protect himself and suffered minor cuts to his hand. The attacker then tried to hit the man with a bottle, but was held back by his companion.

Suspect drunk and under the influence of drugs

A witness alerted the police after the attack. The suspect initially fled after the attack, but was arrested after an extensive manhunt. According to police reports, the man was drunk and presumably under the influence of drugs. He was sedated in hospital because of his aggressive behavior and guarded by police officers, they say. The man was taken back into police custody on Saturday morning.

The crime, in which the man pulled out a knife with a 6.5 centimeter long blade, did not take place in the area of ​​the weapons ban zone, according to the Heilbronn public prosecutor's office. The knife ban zone applies around Heilbronn Central Station, and violations can be punished with fines of up to 10,000 euros. Mayor Harry Mergel (SPD) had announced that the zone would be expanded to the city center for the start of the Heilbronn Wine Village on September 5.
