Darmstadt: Car crashes onto sidewalk and causes accident

A driver caused a fright in Darmstadt, Hesse. As police and prosecutors confirmed in response to a request from WELT, the 24-year-old drove his BMW through several intersections in the Arheilgen district on Monday afternoon at a high speed when the traffic lights were red, according to eyewitnesses. He is also said to have driven onto the sidewalk, where pedestrians were able to avoid the car, according to reports.

At the intersection of Frankfurter Landstrasse and Fuchsstrasse, the driver caused a crash when he drove his BMW into a Skoda. The driver of the Skoda suffered serious injuries. The BMW driver was also taken to hospital with injuries. A blood sample was also taken from him. As WELT learned from official sources, the driver is said to be a German citizen.

No further information is currently available on the exact circumstances. Since intentional action cannot be ruled out based on reports of the car driving at excessive speed, ignoring red lights and driving on the sidewalk, the State Criminal Police Office has taken over the investigation.

It is unclear whether this could be a rampage or whether a mental illness could play a role. According to information from WELT, the Federal Criminal Police Office was also informed. A spokesperson for the authority confirmed that the BKA was aware of the incident.
