Two US soldiers safe after attack in Turkey, officials say

ANKARA, Turkey – A nationalist Turkish youth group physically attacked two U.S. soldiers in western Turkey on Monday, the U.S. Embassy in Turkey and the local governor's office said. Fifteen attackers were arrested in connection with the incident.

A statement from the Izmir governor's office said members of the Turkish Youth Union (TGB), a youth organization of the nationalist opposition party Vatan, “physically attacked” two civilian-clad US soldiers in the Konak district.

Five US soldiers joined the incident after seeing it and police intervened. All 15 attackers were arrested and an investigation into the matter has been launched, it said.

The US embassy in Turkey confirmed the attack and said the US soldiers were now safe.

“We can confirm reports that US soldiers who boarded the USS Wasp were the victims of an attack in Izmir today and are now safe,” the social media platform X said.

Previously, the TGB had posted a video on X showing a group holding a man on the street, putting a white hood over his head and shouting slogans.

The group said the man was a soldier aboard the USS Wasp, an amphibious assault ship. The US Embassy in Ankara said earlier on Monday that the ship was making a port visit to the Aegean coastal city of Izmir this week.

“US soldiers, who have the blood of our soldiers and thousands of Palestinians on their hands, cannot defile our country. Every time you set foot in this country, we will treat you as you deserve,” TGB said.
