Bright sunshine and sweltering temperatures on Sunday in Seattle

SEATTLE – Buckle up, Seattle. We're in for a bit of a temperature rollercoaster this week! Sunday afternoon, highs will reach 30 to 35 degrees in many locations along Puget Sound. On Labor Day, temperatures will drop to just under 21 degrees.

Communities like Seattle, Tacoma, Snoqualmie Pass, Everett and Bellingham will be even hotter than yesterday. As a corridor of hot, dry air moves eastward across Puget Sound and the Cascades today, temperatures along the coast will drop significantly. Highs in the South Sound will be several degrees cooler than yesterday.

There could be high clouds and smoke from fires in Oregon and California this afternoon. I don't expect surface air quality to deteriorate. The smoke could enhance sunset colors tonight. Any remaining haze will be cleared from Western Washington tomorrow.

Stay hydrated today! If you don't have air conditioning at home, I recommend going to a building with air conditioning (such as a mall or movie theater) if you want to take a break from the heat. Fortunately, temperatures will drop significantly on Monday.

There is an increased fire danger today in the Central and South Cascade Mountains. Remember to obey fire bans, keep cars off dry grass, and dispose of cigarettes properly. Fires that start today may spread faster than under normal conditions.

There could be some thunderstorms in the Cascades tomorrow.

A heat warning has been issued for Eastern Washington today.

Labor Day will be noticeably cooler and grayer in Western Washington due to our famous “marine layer” (cool, cloudy air from the Pacific Ocean).

On Tuesday it will be cloudy in the morning, with sunshine in the afternoon. On Wednesday it looks perfect for this time of year, with maximum temperatures comfortably above 25 degrees.

Another warm wave returns on Thursday and Friday, with highs rising again to over 25 degrees. Saturday will be milder, with highs falling slightly to over 25 degrees.
