Ryan Lochte talks about his 10-month recovery process after breaking his leg in a car accident

Ryan Lochte showed his recovery progress after revealing that he was in a life-threatening car accident ten months ago.

The 40-year-old former Olympic swimmer and his wife Kayla Rae Reed posted a video on Instagram on Wednesday detailing his road to recovery. In the video, she encouraged and praised her husband for his efforts to get healthy.

“Life's setbacks may knock you down, but they set the stage for an even stronger comeback!” 33-year-old Reed wrote under the video. “This guy literally took it one step at a time! 🙏”

The clip shows Lochte being pushed home in a wheelchair by his 7-year-old son, Caiden Zane, and walking around his hospital room with a walker as he learns to walk again after injuring his leg.

Lochte also shared another clip of himself attempting to run through his neighborhood while limping.

“Rome wasn't built in a day! Try to improve every day. There's still a long way to go. If you don't try to improve every day, what's the point? Happy Wednesday,” he wrote.

During his July appearance on Kyle Mills' podcast “Athletes Only” – recorded a month after Lochte's accident – he recalled his car accident.

Lochte said he was on his way to pick up his children from school when he accidentally collided with a parked garbage truck in the middle of a busy road.

When his friends and other parents witnessed the incident, many of them tried to pick him up, he said.

“They're saying, 'He's dead. He's not breathing. He's dead.' Blood is shooting out of my head. I still have some stitches in there. I broke my femur. My femur is completely broken in half. My car is a total loss.”

“I still have nightmares,” continued Lochte, who is also father to Georgia June, 1, and Liv Rae, 5.

“I still feel scared when I go to the car to go to physical therapy, for example. I still have visions of the accident. I still have visions of white lights flashing in my eyes.”

Lochte added emotionally, “In the blink of an eye, your life can be over. I'm just so thankful that no one else was hurt but me.”
