Michigan State Fair will continue with more safety,

NOVI, Mich. (WXYZ) — On Saturday, the parking lot next to the Michigan State Fair was packed with police officers searching for evidence related to a shooting that left a 14-year-old boy dead and another injured.

“I've never seen anything like this at the State Fair and never expected anything like this to happen because they have really tight security and things like that,” said Kylah Kiel, a fairgoer.

I spoke to Detroit resident Kylah Kiel immediately after the shooting Saturday night.

She was at the fair with her younger siblings when people started screaming and running away around 10 p.m.

She also ran away, holding her little brother in her arms.

“He was everything to me, that was all. He had to be my top priority and I wanted him to get to a safe place. That's why I kept saying that everyone around us should be quiet,” Kiel said.

Kiel and her siblings left the fair safely.

The shooting did not occur on the fairgrounds, but in a nearby parking lot on Grand River Avenue.

According to Novi police, two 14-year-old boys were shot. One died, the other is expected to be fine.
Police have not yet identified a suspect but say there is no danger to the public. This shooting appears to have been targeted

The fair was open again on Sunday, but due to restricted opening hours it closed at 7 p.m. instead of 10 p.m.

In addition, there were more security measures and people under 18 had to be accompanied by an adult.

We spoke to a fairgoer on Sunday who said she thinks fairs will look very different in the future after this shooting and other incidents at large public events in the Detroit area.

“People need to realize that now everywhere you look there will be police,” said Julia Carey of Westland.

Another trade fair visitor told me what he thought about more safety and rules at the trade fair.

“You can put certain policies in place and tighten security measures… but when it comes to etiquette, how to behave in public, you have to start at home,” says Vernon Norwood of Detroit.
