From the unique Indonesian martial arts to the high-energy camerawork, The Raid redefines the action genre.

In recent years, The Raid has established itself as a classic of action cinema. Released in 2011, the Indonesian film impressed with its high level of violence and the amazing martial arts skills of its actors. Here are five reasons why The Raid is considered the best action film of all time.

1. Unique representation of Indonesian martial arts

“The Raid” stands out from the usual gun-heavy action films by highlighting the Indonesian martial art “Pencak Silat”. This traditional form of fighting, rarely seen in Western films, brings a fresh perspective to the genre. Director Gareth Evans, who originally wanted to make a documentary about Pencak Silat, decided to present this martial art in an action film. The result is a film that captivates audiences with precise and artistic fight scenes.

2. Nonstop action

From the first minute, The Raid delivers a non-stop barrage of action sequences that keep the audience hooked. The speed and intensity of the fight scenes are breathtaking. The film opens with a SWAT team storming a drug lord-controlled apartment complex, and the action immediately picks up speed. Highlights like the improvised explosion involving a propane tank showcase the creativity and ingenuity of the characters and add to the high tension.

3. Hyperkinetic camera work

Gareth Evans' camerawork is a key part of the success of The Raid. The fluid movement of the camera draws viewers into the action and allows them to experience the action without any distracting cuts. This technique increases tension and immersion as viewers feel like they are right there in the fight scenes. Evans' camerawork is designed to perfectly capture the dynamics and intensity of the fights.

4. Perfectly coordinated soundtrack

The soundtrack by Mike Shinoda, co-founder of Linkin Park, contributes significantly to the tension and dynamics of the fight scenes. The music perfectly underlines the action and enhances the experience for the audience. A standout example is the scene in which Rama defeats the Machete Gang. The music builds slowly and then adapts to the fast choreography of the fight scene, resulting in an intense and gripping experience.

5. Exceptional acting performances

The acting performances in “The Raidare outstanding, especially by Iko Uwais, who not only acts as the lead actor but also as the fight choreographer. Uwais and many other actors have extensive experience in martial arts, which greatly increases the credibility and quality of the fight scenes. Their expertise ensures that every scene seems authentic and dangerous, making the film a masterpiece of action cinema.

For action fans, “The Raid” is an absolute must-watch. You probably won't find a better fighting film. And if you can't get enough of it, luckily there is a second part: “The Raid 2”. It doesn't quite match the class of the first film, but it is still an absolute masterpiece in the action genre.

2024 also had some solid action movies to offer – although none of them are as good as “The Raid”. From “The Land of Bad” with Russel Crowe and Luke Hemsworth to “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare” with Henry Cavill and Alan Ritchson.
