Jordan Thompson vs. Alex de Minaur prediction: US Open odds, tips

Not many tennis players have such a great career after their 30th birthday, but Jordan Thompson does just that.

The 30-year-old Australian has been a mainstay of the ATP Tour for years, but has spent most of his time fluctuating between 50th and 100th place in the world rankings.

Thompson was known as a tough competitor, but he just didn't seem to have the skill level to rise above it. Thompson had his moments, but he was never able to put things together on a big stage.

That is the case so far.

Thompson is the underdog in Monday's US Open round of 16 match against fellow Australian Alex de Minaur, but given the former's current form and the latter's recent injury, the match should be much more exciting than the -380/+280 odds suggest.

Thompson has a 22-10 record on hard courts in 2024, recently reached the final in Atlanta and has defeated Jack Draper, Hubert Hurkacz and Taylor Fritz since June.

All this means that the Sydney native is currently at the highest ranking of his career (29th place).

De Minaur, on the other hand, is somewhat of an unknown in this match, which is not great when you are the favorite.

Despite being the better player, de Minaur missed most of the summer after suffering a hip injury at Wimbledon.

He has answered the questions he has been asked so far at the US Open, but these questions were not too difficult.

Given Thompson's form, de Minaur's fitness and the fact that this is likely to be a tough contest, there is little to argue against backing the underdog in this one.
