NIT-T forms high-level committee to review student safety | Trichy News

TRICHY: National Institute of Technology-Trichy (NIT-T) formed a high level Committee composed of faculty of the institution to investigate student safety on campus. The development came in the wake of the sexual harassment of a student by a Contract technician in the institute’s girls’ dormitory on August 29th.
NIT-T said an action plan with security protocols and optimized communication channels is currently being finalized. Committee interacted with stakeholders and discussed issues related to student welfare. It was learnt that the Director of the Institute, G. Aghila, also met with the student community on Monday to allay their fears regarding the safety of students on campus.
Since the sexual harassment in the girls' hostel, thus calling into question the security infrastructure, an interim hostel management committee was also formed by NIT Trichy with immediate effect. It may be recalled that a 38-year-old contract worker named G Kathiresan, a technician from Ramanathapuram district, was arrested by the Thiruverumbur All Women Police Station (AWPS) personnel in Trichy and charged with the offence of sexually harassing a girl student in the girls' hostel.
The accused, who visited the hostel to fix the Wi-Fi connection, harassed the victim when she was alone in her room. Hundreds of students condemned the institute administration, including for an alleged insensitive remark towards the victim, and protested at the institute last week demanding better security infrastructure for the students in the hostels.
