Owen makes Premier League title prediction after Reds beat Man Utd

Michael Owen believes it will take “a special team to stop” Liverpool from winning the Premier League title this season after they beat Man United 3-0 on Sunday.

Luis Diaz scored two goals in seven minutes towards the end of the first half. Liverpool took advantage of two mistakes by Casemiro and Mohamed Salah scored his third goal in three games in the second period.

Man Utd was second best in every respect and the home fans left the stadium in large numbers long before the final whistle to increase the pressure on coach Erik ten Hag.

The Dutchman's team is in 14th place in the table after two defeats in the first three league games. Arne Slot's reign at Anfield began with three consecutive wins.

And now former Liverpool and Man Utd striker Owen says the Reds have answered all pre-season questions and doubts about Slot's new team.

“If you ask Pep Guardiola who he thinks is the biggest threat, it's a neck-and-neck race between Arsenal and Liverpool,” said Owen. Premier League productions.

“At the start of the season he might have said Arsenal because you knew what you were getting – the same manager, the same players and one or two reinforcements – but there were some doubts about what would happen with the new manager at Liverpool.

“Will it be a completely new style? Will it take a while for them to adapt? All those questions. From Liverpool's point of view, of course, the only good thing is that they have kept the squad.

“There were hardly any departures, it was a structured squad and he came into a squad in which many players were at the peak of their performance.

“There were questions about Liverpool but after three games you think 'wow', it takes a special team to stop them. They just swept United aside.”

And former Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes reckons Liverpool could overtake Arsenal as Man City's biggest rivals this season.

Scholes added: “They could really challenge for the title this year. Before the ball was even kicked, I thought this was going to be Arsenal's year where they could give City a real chance and potentially win.

“But after watching the first three games, I think Liverpool could overtake Arsenal. Last year they were right up there for a long time, but in the last few games they dropped off.

“If they keep the squad together and the majority stay fit, I think this is a team that can challenge City without a doubt.”
