1 dead after fire at a house in Dearborn that was in a state where a hoarder's house went up in flames

A man died when a Level 3 fire broke out in his crowded Dearborn home early Monday morning, fire officials said.

The fire broke out around 7:30 a.m. in the 2000 block of Detroit Street in Dearborn. Emergency crews arrived about five minutes after the fire was reported.

Joe Murray, chief of the Dearborn Fire Department, described the condition of the house as that of a hoarder's apartment, which made extinguishing efforts difficult.

Firefighters immediately entered the home and searched for the victim until they found him, Murray said. But during the rescue operation, two firefighters ran out of air, prompting a mayday call.

Additional first responders arrived on scene to assist.

One firefighter managed to free himself through a window, the other was able to get outside with the help of a rapid response team.

None of the firefighters were injured.

The victim was taken to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.

The fire has been extinguished and investigations are ongoing.
