MULTIPLE. Today, Monday, September 2nd, 2024, a serious traffic accident occurred on the A1 motorway in the direction of Koblenz near the town of Mehren at around 10:20 a.m.

A van with a trailer was overtaking a truck driving in the right lane in the left lane when a car arriving at very high speed in the long curve noticed the van too late and drove into the trailer.

The force of the impact caused the trailer to be torn off. The trailer damaged the left side of the truck it was overtaking until it finally came to a stop sideways in the left lane.

A car driver standing a little further back recognized the situation, braked and was still in the right lane when another vehicle recognized the trailer parked across the road and swerved to the right, hitting the rear of the car there.

Fortunately, despite the apparently massive damage to the vehicles, the people were only slightly injured. Due to the rescue and clean-up work, the motorway was completely closed in the direction of Koblenz from 10:20 a.m. to around 2:00 p.m.

The rescue helicopter and the volunteer fire brigades from Lauffeld, Wallscheid, Manderscheid as well as the fire brigade management, the Wittlich motorway maintenance depot and the Schweich police motorway station were on duty.

The police point out that even if there is no speed limit on the motorway, you may only drive at a speed that allows you to control your vehicle at all times (Section 3 of the Road Traffic Regulations).

This also means that you can safely stop at any time to avoid suddenly appearing obstacles.
